Victorian Legal Aid (VLA) is seeking applications from highly motivated legal professionals for the role of Lawyer, Assessment and Referral Court.

About the role:
You will appear in the Magistrates’ Court and other courts or tribunals to effectively advocate for VLA clients, including as a duty lawyer as required, primarily in criminal law and family violence matters. You will also deliver high quality legal services by providing legal information and advice, conducting casework, and providing appropriate referrals to other agencies or services where required.

This role provides an experienced legal professional the opportunity to join a supportive regional office team and access to the broader Therapeutic Courts team delivering services across Drug Courts, Assessment and Referral Courts (ARC), and the Neighbourhood Justice Centre.

About you:
You will demonstrate a capacity to act as an advocate, provide advice, conduct casework and undertake negotiation and dispute resolution on behalf of clients. You will also demonstrate an understanding of the criminal law jurisdiction and court procedures with the capacity to advocate for clients with diverse and complex needs and identify client’s needs beyond their immediate legal issue.

To be successful in this role, you will have excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of clients. You will also demonstrate a commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues and external stakeholders to achieve better outcomes for our clients and the community more broadly.
