This submission occurred in Semester One 2021, in collaboration with our committee and community. It included input from CLCs and drew on our personal experiences.
Inquiry into the Ending Indefinite and Arbitrary Immigration Detention Bill
The Joint Standing Committee on Migration held an inquiry into the Ending Indefinite and Arbitrary Immigration Detention Bill 2021, introduced by Andrew Wilkie MP. This Bill addresses many of the chilling human rights failures of Australia’s immigration system, including by ending mandatory detention and offshore processing of people seeking asylum, and putting a time-limit on immigration detention with safeguards for appropriate support services.
The Progressive Law Network mobilised its committee and broader community at the beginning of 2022 to make a submission in support of the Bill. Our submission endorses the Bill but seeks to address potential loopholes arising from its drafting, to advocate for fairer immigration policy aligned with international law.
