Our Work

One of the PLN’s missions is to interact with current law reform inquires – to develop a taste for the law and to also push for social change from the very beginning of our careers.

Past Projects

Australian Law Reform Commission: Review of Judicial Impartiality

Our Submission to the ALRC was developed in Semester One 2021, in collaboration with our Committee and broader community. It included input from CLCs and drew on our personal experiences. The ALRC’s final report, which referenced the PLN submission 9 times, was tabled in Federal parliament on 2 August 2022.

Inquiry into the Ending Indefinite and Arbitrary Immigration Detention Bill

The Joint Standing Committee on Migration held an inquiry into the Ending Indefinite and Arbitrary Immigration Detention Bill 2021, introduced by Andrew Wilkie MP. This Bill addresses many of the chilling human rights failures of Australia’s immigration system, including by ending mandatory detention and offshore processing of people seeking asylum, and putting a time-limit on immigration detention with safeguards for appropriate support services.

The Progressive Law Network mobilised its Committee and broader community at the beginning of 2022 to make a submission in support of the Bill. Our submission endorses the Bill but seeks to address potential loopholes arising from its drafting, to advocate for fairer immigration policy aligned with international law.
