Law and Discrimination – LAW4129

Review 1

When did you complete this unit? Semester and Year

Semester 1 2021.

Teaching of the Unit (lecture, class and tutorial style)

2x 1.5 hour lectures.

What are assessments and exams like?

We had to do a research essay worth 40% of our grade. We were given 3 essay topics relating to different areas of discrimination, and were asked whether these areas ought to be reformed, and if so how. The essay was very insightful as it forced me to grapple with how discrimination law works now, and what improvements ought to be made. It made me more a more critical thinker and law student.

Essentiality of readings? i.e. Must complete or are lectures sufficient?

You can get by on the lectures, especially for topics 3 and 4, but the readings give you a deeper and more holistic understanding, and likely a better grade.

Pros and Cons of the Unit

Pros: Colin is a fantastic lecturer and it is a shame that he is leaving. The content is interesting, and Colin has the remarkable ability to simplify the hardest concepts. He also ran class discussions in such a way that I participated which I had never done before!

Cons: the intensity of the readings is heavily skewed to the first 2 topics but there isn’t much to be done about it.

Colin is leaving and I don’t know the fate of the unit, but I’d recommend doing it!! Try make sure you keep up with topics 1 and 2 content because without it, topics 3 and 4 will be way more difficult.

Pros and Cons of the Unit

Pros: great student discussion during lectures, lovely lectures, a safe space to talk about nuanced issues, directly relevant to real life, very interesting and easy to engage in.

Cons: the structure can be a bit confusing but it starts to come together in the end. There’s also not much information on the slides so there’s a lot of furious typing.

Engage in class discussions as much as you can, it really helps.
