Introduction to Family Law – LAW4177

Review 1

When did you complete this unit? Semester and Year

Summer A 2020-2021.

Teaching of the Unit (lecture, class and tutorial style)

Intensive 2 week course, with 6 classes spread out over the 2 weeks.

What are assessments and exams like?

The exam was 2-3 weeks after the last class. It was a take home exam that was quite reasonable considering you had more than a day to complete it. A couple weeks after the exam, the ‘group assignment’ was due. The assignment was a policy style question which was released weeks in advance, giving students plenty of time to think about the topic and start planning.

Essentiality of readings? i.e. Must complete or are lectures sufficient?

Due to the intense nature of each class (running for essentially the whole day), it was sometimes required to read certain resources/ watch pre-recorded videos before class.

Pros and Cons of the Unit

It’s a great unit to do if you have an interest in family law and want a broad overview of what this area of practice entails. The topics are extremely interesting and the assessments are reasonable. The unit is quite intense however, so if you’re doing it over the Summer A period it will take up a large portion of your time from December- January.

Once the classes have finished, read over your notes to refresh your memory every week leading up to the exam so you’re not having to re-familiarise yourself with complex topics.

Essential for the take-home exam.

Pros and Cons of the Unit

Pros- Broad, interesting content that is a good intro to family law.
